Travel Log

Over the years, assignments and professional meetings have brought me to many places.  Here are some endearing locations outside of the US, although I will add US cities.  The photos are not necessarily the best of each location.  I am gathering a few from the thousands of photos in many albums, too laborious to share them all. But over time I can add, and improve on the selection, as it is fun to reminisce. Occassionally I give some comments, historical or personal.  Details of these places' unusual features is fading.  England, Austria, Germany, and Italy were toured by rental car mostly.  Many pictures of the "in-betweens" are excluded, but I was a photo trigger-happy guy, hence the overwhelming volume of photos are left to albums, none are digital.  The travels were mainly done while I was at Boeing running Computational Math or Computer Sciencd organizations.   The purpose included research contract presentations with customers in Japan and Australia, Cray User Group meetings, and other professional computation mathematics meetings where I always was a presenter at such meetings to garner Boeing;s support.   Quite often I would stay a few days longer to see a few sites at my marginal expense.  On a few occassions Cheri came along, but was not the avid traveller.   She has many comments in that regard, including my insanity to see as much as I could get to.   What I have not shared here were the many many photos inside Cathedrals, as I had passional personal interest in them which was spurred by my reading much about their construction.  For example Kenneth Follet's, "Pillars of the Earth" or non-fiction accounts of the evolution of Cathederals.  The cathedral at Aachen was amazing, with deep blue windows.   It was built before flying butresses were invented.  Thus, it also fell down three times during construction.  Each cathedral took many generations to build, and many are ignored by current generations.  On a couple of occassions I was accompanied by a local person, who would admit it was the first time they ever went inside.

CITIES WITH AN ASTERIX * mark places I gave a lecture or keynote adress at a meeting or invited speaker.  This was a prerequisite for business travel expenses..  Those cities were launching pads for side visits
